A helpful guide from your friends at Big Green Box Moving
Packing is one of the most time-consuming parts of moving, but with the right plan, it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Whether you’re moving across Wilmington or across the country, this simple how-to pack for a stress-free move guide will help you stay organized, protect your belongings, and make moving day a whole lot smoother.
1. Start With a Packing Plan
Before you grab the tape, take 10 minutes to map out what you’ll pack first. We recommend starting with the rooms and items you use the least: guest rooms, decorative shelves, off-season clothing, and storage closets. This keeps daily life comfortable while you gradually chip away at the work.
Pro tip: Pack one room at a time. It keeps the process organized and makes unpacking a breeze.
2. Gather the Right Supplies (Green When Possible!)
Using high-quality materials keeps your belongings safe. Here’s what you’ll need:
Moving boxes
Packing paper or recycled paper
Bubble wrap for fragile items
Heavy-duty tape
Labels or markers
Ziplock bags for screws & hardware
Eco-friendly bonus: Skip newspaper (the ink can transfer) and try to avoid single-use plastics when possible.
3. Declutter as You Go
Packing is the perfect time to lighten your load. Create three piles: keep, donate, recycle. Not only will this make your move easier, it gives your gently used items a second life.
When our Find the Big Green Box donation events pop up around Wilmington, we’re happy to take items off your hands for a good cause.
4. Protect Your Fragile Items Like a Pro
Think of fragile pieces as needing a cozy little nest.
✔ Wrap each item individually
✔ Add padding underneath and around
✔ Keep heavy items on the bottom, light items on top
✔ Label fragile boxes clearly (and on all sides!)
Sprout’s tip: Plates should be packed vertically, like records. It reduces breakage significantly.
5. Don’t Overpack Boxes
A good rule of thumb: if the box makes you say “oof” when you lift it, it’s too heavy.
Heavy items (like books) go in small boxes. Light items (like bedding) go in larger boxes. Your back, and our movers, will thank you.
6. Create a “First Night” Essentials Box
Pack a box with everything you’ll want access to right away:
Medications
Chargers
Toiletries
Bedding
Pajamas
Snacks
Pet supplies
Label it clearly and keep it with you. You’ll be so glad you did.
7. Label Everything Clearly
The more detail, the better.
Replace vague labels like “misc kitchen” with:“Kitchen – Utensils & Baking Tools” It makes unpacking dramatically faster and reduces the “where is that thing?” headache.
8. Pack a Little Each Day
Packing isn’t one big job, it’s lots of little ones. Break it into 20–30 minute daily chunks. It keeps stress levels low and motivation high.
9. Leave Your Closets for Last
Clothing is quick to pack and unpack, perfect for the end. Use wardrobe boxes for easy closet transitions or roll clothing into suitcases to maximize space.
10. Let Us Help When You Need It
Packing is a big task, and you don’t have to tackle it alone. Our Big Green Box Moving crew is fully trained in packing, unpacking, and careful item protection. If you’d like help with a single room or your whole home, we’re here to lighten the load.
