Sunset Beach sits at the very southern tip of North Carolina's coast, close enough to South Carolina that plenty of residents cross state lines for groceries. It's quieter than some of its Brunswick County neighbors, with a mainland side built around the Ingram Planetarium and a historic swing bridge that, until a fixed high-rise bridge was added, was the island's only connection to the mainland for decades.

About The Area
The island itself is largely residential, known for a slower pace than Myrtle Beach just over the state line, and for Bird Island at its western tip, an undeveloped barrier island reachable by a beach walk and home to the famous Kindred Spirit mailbox, where visitors have left handwritten notes for decades. On the mainland side, the Ingram Planetarium offers free admission to its star shows and a hurricane simulator, a popular stop for new residents with kids.
schools & family info
Sunset Beach is part of Brunswick County Schools, with most families commuting inland toward Shallotte or Supply for elementary, middle, and high school, since there's no school directly on the island.
Things To do
Beyond Bird Island's mailbox tradition, Sunset Beach's historic Swing Bridge & Museum tells the story of the island's original access route, and the town's quieter shoreline (with fewer high-rises than towns further north) is a draw for people who want an easygoing beach without the crowds. Shallotte, about 10 minutes away, covers the shopping and dining that Sunset Beach itself doesn't have much of.

Local Moving Tips
Sunset Beach's residential streets are generally quieter than Ocean Isle's or Oak Island's, but the island still has a single main access route, so our crews plan around seasonal traffic and any HOA-specific parking rules during the free walkthrough. If your move involves an elevated or piling-supported home, we bring the right equipment from the start.
