Kure Beach is the smaller, quieter neighbor at the south end of Pleasure Island, a town of a little over 2,000 people that trades the boardwalk bustle of Carolina Beach for a 711-foot fishing pier and easy walks out to Fort Fisher. It's the kind of place where a moving crew needs to know the difference between a beach cottage a block from the ocean and a home tucked back near the marsh, because the loading logistics for each are genuinely different.

About The Area

Named after town founder Hans Kure, Kure Beach has been called one of the "beaches where history was made," thanks to its proximity to Fort Fisher, the Confederacy's last open port during the Civil War and the site of the war's largest combined land-sea battle. About ten percent of the original earthen fort still stands today. Closer to town, the historic Kure Beach Fishing Pier, rebuilt several times since 1923, remains open around the clock in season, and the shoreline near Fort Fisher hides a rare coquina rock outcropping, one of the only rock formations on the entire North Carolina coast.

schools & family info

Like the rest of Pleasure Island, Kure Beach is served by New Hanover County Schools, with the nearest schools shared across the island before students move up to Wilmington-area middle and high schools. It's worth confirming exact zoning with the district, since boundary lines can shift year to year.

Things To do

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, with its 200,000-plus gallon shark tank, is the area's marquee family outing, and the six miles of undeveloped beach at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area are a draw for surf fishing and loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the warmer months. Ocean Front Park has a pirate-ship playground and a pavilion for community events, and a car ferry from the Fort Fisher terminal makes a scenic 35-minute crossing to Southport for anyone wanting a day trip across the river.

Local Moving Tips

Kure Beach's streets are narrower and quieter than its northern neighbor's, which is good news for your hourly bill, less traffic to fight through, but also less room to stage a truck, so our crews plan loading zones during the free walkthrough rather than guessing on move day. If your move involves the Fort Fisher ferry or a hop across to Southport, we'll build that into the timeline up front.
