Britt's Donuts has been frying glazed donuts on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk since 1939, and the line still forms every summer morning the same way it always has. That's the thing about this town... For as much as it changes, the core of it stays remarkably the same: a walkable strip of shops and arcades, a lake park locals actually use, and streets narrow enough that you notice every moving truck that rolls down them.

That narrowness matters more than people expect. A lot of homes here are older beach cottages set close together, or newer builds up on pilings with a single flight of exterior stairs doing all the work. Getting a couch up those stairs, or a truck parked on a street built for golf carts, takes local reps, not a guess. Kayak Carolina and Paddle NC both launch guided trips into the salt marsh and out toward Zeke's Island, and Tony Silvagni Surf School (run by an Olympic medalist) is one of the better-known surf schools on this stretch of coast.
